Nature's lenses are provided by waterdrops. Anything behind a waterdrop will be refracted shown upside down and left-to-right - just like a glass lens.

Taken for Active Assignment Weekly: Lenses

Assignment: You can take photos of anything you like but in your image the lens (glasses, contact lenses, magnifying lenses, telescopes, camera lenses...any!) must be an important part of the composition.

Dare: show us the world through your lens (and of course I don't mean your camera's lens but the lens that you put in your photo)!

Restriction: no people in the photo...but any other human living being is allowed.

What it took:: Green plant placed on a chair in the bathroom and given a shower so there were loads of water drops hanging from the leaves. Orange flower placed behind green plant and black cardboard placed behind orange flower.

Lit by overhead tungsten light diffused through frosted lamp shade.

Focusing on the water drop was easy, but focusing on the refraction of the flower within the water drop was a pain. The distances involved are tiny and it feels like the DOF is non-existing.

It was a great learning experience, but also a lengthy one. I started by trying to place drops on a leaf with an eye dropper. But as waterdrops are most stable in a humid environment and as our living room is not moist, this was a waste of time. By filling the bathroom with steam and then showering a plant, I had loads of drops within a few minutes.

There's an excellent introduction to water drop refraction photos here

Mass Exodus

Something, or someone, disturbed the ducks near the shore at Santee Lakes, and they all took off and spooked the heron. He was so irate. He flew about thirty feet and landed on the roof of a boathouse and protested loudly for a long time. An impressive display of outrage. I took about five pictures of him flying, and in all of them his beak is wide open, screeching the entire way.

Santee Lakes, as I've learned from local nature photographer Steve Cirone is a marvelous place to take bird photographs. I live nearby, and only used to go there for infrared photography.

Like all photographs it looks best large. Press "L" to see it large on a dark background.

Other pictures of birds and critters plus infrared landscapes can be seen in my Santee Lakes set. ..... www.flickr.com/photos/9422878@N08/sets/72157627547766547/...

More of my bird pictures can bee seen in (of all places) my birds set. www.flickr.com/photos/9422878@N08/sets/72157628206812625/

The Foxglove, Digitalis grow in tall spires with dangling tube-like flowers. They come in white, yellows, mauves, maroons and purples, many with beautiful speckles in the 'throat'. The genus is native to Europe, western and central Asia, and northwestern Africa.

Medicines from foxgloves are called "Digitalin". The use of Digitalis purpurea extract containing cardiac glycosides for the treatment of heart conditions was first described by William Withering, in 1785, which is considered the beginning of modern therapeutics.
